Beautiful Disaster

Carsen goes to bed at about 8:00 most nights. Lately he's been on a kick where he has to have the door left open when we leave. This seems to present a temptation that is just too hard for his two year old self to resist. He gets out of bed constantly and comes out to investigate what's going on.

We decided to be firm about keeping the door closed. What we've tried consists of closing it, locking it from the inside, and wrapping the handle with duct tape. This hasn't worked. He peels off the duct tape, unlocks the door, then runs out triumphantly to greet us with a sunny "Good morning!". After a few weeks of this unsuccessful routine, we found what we thought would be the perfect solution.
The first night we put this on Carsen's door, we heard him whining a little and fiddling with his new obstacle. Then all was quiet. Travis went to check out the situation and found Carsen sitting in the middle of his room with two pieces of the "child proof" cover in each hand. Then Carsen looked up at Travis and said: "I just want it off."

I used to listen to Kelly Clarkson's "Beautiful Disaster" song and think of Travis. Now that song seems more appropriate for Carsen.

What can I say. Like father like son right?

Jessica, here's my tag picture (6th photo from 6th file). I'm not sure what's going on here. I don't think I want to know.

  1. The pictures are cute! Ally has yet to figure out those door knob things, Cosette was able to take them off at 10 months. If you are still having trouble keeping Carsen in bed, try flipping the door knob around (if theres a lock on it). Or you could just sit outside his door with a book. Ally also likes to come out and say Good morning. Good Luck!

  2. HaHa, that's such a funny pic of Carsen digging in the basket!...We had trouble with Ian getting out of bed as well when we first took him out of the crib. We did turn the door knob around so that we could lock it from the outside. At first Ian would cry, but eventually he would fall asleep. You could even unlock it after he's asleep so he can still get out in the A.M. After a few days to a week or so of the door locking at night it became routine for him of going to bed right away and wouldn't try to unlock/ come out of bed anymore. It took alot on our end though of being FIRM and CONSISTENT about staying in bed. Sorry this is such a long comment! Good luck with bedtime!
